- Catalog and buying decisions
- Theme and store configuration
- Order testing and handoff
Start with a purchase that represents the real business
Choose several representative orders before outlining pages. A customer buying one ready-to-ship item has a different path from someone selecting a personalized product, comparing a multipack or arranging local pickup. Document what the customer must know, what they must select and what staff need after payment. This becomes a practical acceptance test rather than a wish list of features.
For example, a store selling apparel may need fit guidance and accurate size availability, while a seller of replacement components may need dimensions and compatibility information. These are planning examples, not claims about Dappr clients. The important distinction is whether the content helps a buyer avoid a wrong purchase. That requirement should influence product organization, photography and the information visible beside the purchase button.
Model products before decorating their pages
Shopify variants represent combinations of product options, such as size and color, with inventory managed at the variant level. The catalog plan should identify which differences belong within one product and which deserve separate listings. Names, identifiers, prices, images and stock rules need consistent ownership. A beautiful option selector cannot repair incorrect source data.
Ask the team to provide a small, clean product sample first. Include an ordinary item, a product with several choices and one with unusual shipping or availability rules. Review the sample on a phone and in the administration area before preparing the rest of the catalog. This catches mismatched terminology early and makes the data preparation work easier to estimate.
Collections and navigation should reflect useful shopping routes. A visitor may browse by use, category or compatibility rather than an internal supplier code. Avoid creating multiple near-identical categories simply to fill a menu. Each collection should offer a sensible set of products and enough context for a shopper to understand why they belong together.
Choose a theme and define the custom work
Shopify separates store content such as products and pages from the theme that presents it. Theme templates provide the structure for product, collection and other page types. The project should therefore distinguish catalog work, visual configuration and custom development. They are related tasks, but changing one does not automatically complete the others.
A theme evaluation should use actual products and content rather than only the demonstration store. Check long product names, unavailable variants, image proportions, navigation depth and the cart on small screens. Determine whether the owner can maintain important sections without editing code. Custom work is justified when it solves a documented requirement that the chosen theme cannot reasonably support.
Paid themes and additional applications create costs beyond the development fee. Record who owns each license, what the application does and what happens if it is removed. App selection should follow the requirement; installing several overlapping tools can complicate performance, support and data handling. Existing subscriptions and customizations need review before promising compatibility.
Treat checkout and fulfillment as part of the website
Shopify Checkout collects the information needed to place an order and take payment. The storefront must set expectations before the customer reaches that point. Product pages should make delivery limitations, return conditions and any important exclusions easy to find. The owner supplies and approves those commercial policies; design does not establish them.
Create a responsibility list for payment activation, shipping zones, fulfillment procedures and tax settings. The business remains responsible for its financial and legal decisions, with appropriate professional advice where needed. Dappr can scope the website configuration and testing around approved requirements without implying that a design project includes accounting advice or every operational integration.
Unusual order models require early investigation. Subscriptions, wholesale purchasing, customized goods and multiple fulfillment locations can change the platform, application and plan requirements. The proposal should identify what is confirmed, what needs technical evaluation and which features are outside the initial release. A store should not launch with a promise its order process cannot support.
Test the order, not only the page
Shopify recommends placing test orders during setup and after payment-setting changes. Its testing tools help inspect checkout, notifications, shipping, inventory and other order settings. Payment providers in test mode cannot accept live customer orders, so testing needs a controlled schedule and an explicit return to the intended live configuration.
The project test plan should cover the actual buying scenarios agreed at discovery. Review successful orders, unavailable products, quantity changes, discount behavior and the messages customers receive. Check that staff can identify the purchased variation and understand the fulfillment action. Test a refund or cancellation through the appropriate supported process, with the owner approving any real transaction and associated fees.
Accessibility and performance checks belong alongside these functional tests. Keyboard users should be able to select options and understand errors. Images should communicate the product without making the page unnecessarily heavy. Record remaining issues by their effect on purchasing, rather than treating every visual preference as equally urgent.
Price the deliverables and the ongoing responsibility
A useful Shopify proposal identifies the page templates, catalog preparation, product entry allowance, custom features, testing and handoff included. It also states whether copywriting, photography, migration, integrations and ongoing changes are separate. The number of products alone is an incomplete estimate: a small catalog with complex personalization can require more work than a larger, consistent catalog.
Dappr does not publish an invented universal price for this scope. Bring the existing store if there is one, representative product data, the fulfillment process and a list of required connections. Those inputs make it possible to separate a necessary first release from later improvements. The resulting quote should distinguish development from platform subscriptions and third-party charges.
Handoff should leave the owner with practical instructions for routine product updates, promotions and order checks. Decide who reviews future theme or application changes and how issues are reported. A launch is the start of operating the store; a clear maintenance arrangement prevents small catalog changes from becoming avoidable support problems.
Questions before you begin
Can an existing Shopify theme be used?
Yes, subject to its license and fit for the store. Evaluate it with representative products, navigation and purchasing scenarios. A theme may reduce custom work, but it does not replace catalog preparation, content decisions or order testing.
Does Shopify development include entering every product?
The proposal should state the product entry or import allowance and who cleans the source data. Product count, variant complexity and missing images affect the work. A sample catalog review helps identify these requirements before a price is agreed.
Can checkout be customized to match any design?
Available checkout changes depend on Shopify's current capabilities, the store plan and the requested feature. Verify the requirement before treating a mockup as a promise. Some needs are better solved through clearer product information or a different order process.
Will changing a theme delete the products?
Shopify manages products, collections and pages separately from the theme. Their presentation and custom features still need checking when the theme changes. Preserve a recoverable copy and test the store before making a replacement theme live.
What does Dappr need to estimate the project?
Provide sample products, the intended customer journey, fulfillment rules, brand assets and required connections. Include an existing store and its applications if applicable. Dappr can then define the website scope, separate recurring charges and identify decisions that need the owner's approval.
